ABOUT YOUR NEWBORN SESSION
Welcoming a new baby can be overwhelming and comes with a lot of questions – especially when it comes to newborn photography. Below you’ll find answers to some of my most frequently asked questions parents ask before booking a session. If you don’t see your question here – please send me an email and I’ll be more than happy to answer it.
WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY NEWBORN SESSION
I highly recommend booking your newborn session while you’re in your second, or early third, trimester. This ensures I have availability around your due date as I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month. Once your baby arrives, we’ll schedule the actual date of your session. Newborn are typically photographed when babies are between 5-21 days old, when they’re the sleepiest and most comfortable being posed.
WHAT IF MY BABY ARRIVES EARLY OR LATE?
No worries at all! Your session is booked based on your due date and I limit the number of sessions each month to ensure availability should your baby come early or late! Once your baby arrives we’ll schedule the actual date of your session.
WHERE DO NEWBORN SESSIONS TAKE PLACE?
All newborn sessions take place at my home studio located 15 mins south of Calgary in Okotoks. My studio is specifically designed for newborns and parents, offering a calm and comfortable environment with everything needed for a smooth session (right down to extra diapers and pacis if needed!) You don’t need to prepare your home or make space for equipment – just simply arrive with your baby and relax!
HOW LONG DO NEWBORN SESSIONS LAST?
Newborn sessions typically last 2-3 hours, depending on the type of session scheduled. This allows plenty of time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes and cuddling without ever feeling rushed.
WHAT SHOULD WE BRING TO OUR SESSION?
Very little! I recommend bringing extra diapers, milk or formula, a pacifier (even if your baby is not taking one it can really help settle them into certain poses), snacks and drinks for yourself. I provide all the wraps, hats, headbands, props etc!
WHAT SHOULD PARENTS WEAR?
I recommend parents wear neutral, soft-toned clothing as it photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on your baby. Think creams, tans, khaki, or muted pastels. Please avoid anything with patterns, or big logos.
DO YOU PROVIDE PROPS AND OUTFITS FOR THE BABY?
Yes – everything you see in my portfolio is available to use for your session. The studio is stocked with carefully selected items that are the perfect fit for your baby, along with blankets, hats and headbands that are perfectly coordinated. If there is something special you would like to include in your session please let me know so we can discuss the perfect way to include it.
CAN SIBLINGS AND PARENTS BE INCLUDED?
Absolutely! Siblings are included with the Heirloom Session! This sessions allows plenty of time so we can take breaks as needed without siblings feeling overwhelmed by the experience. Parents are included with the Signature session and can be added on to the Petite.
WHAT IF MY BABY IS FUSSY OR DOESN'T SLEEP?
This is a very common question with new parents – but don’t worry! My newborn sessions are baby-led and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to sooth, calm and get your baby into a nice deep sleep!
IS NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SAFE?
YES! Your baby’s safety is always my top priority during your session. I have over 15 years experience with handling and posing newborn babies gently and safely. All poses are done with your babies comfort and safety in mind and composite created when needed. I never force a baby into a pose if they are feeling uncomfortable!
when will we receive our pictures?
You’ll receive a proofing gallery 3 days after your session where you can select your favorite images. Once you have selected your pictures, my typical turnaround time is 7 business days (once your final invoice has been paid)!
how do we book a newborn session?
To book your session, simply reach out on my contact page. A retainer and a signed contract is required to secure your due date on my calendar!
