This is one of the most common worries parents share before their newborn session — and I want you to take a deep breath: it’s completely okay if your baby doesn’t sleep!
Some babies sleep deeply, some stay wide awake, and some do a little of both. Beautiful images are possible whether they’re asleep or awake.
A baby-led approach matters
Newborn sessions should never be rushed or forced. A calm, baby-led approach allows time for:
- Feeding
- Cuddling
- Diaper changes
- Comfort breaks
When babies feel safe and settled, everything flows naturally. You can be assured that I have little tricks up my sleeve to make every session successful and you go home with beautiful pictures and memories!
Awake babies can be magical
Some of the most meaningful images come from awake moments — tiny stretches, curious eyes, and peaceful expressions. These moments tell your baby’s story just as beautifully as sleepy poses.
Your role as a parent
Your only job during the session is to relax. You don’t need to apologize, stress, or worry. I’ll gently guide the session based on your baby’s needs and cues. While some poses require a sleepy baby, there are plenty we can do if your baby decides to stay awake!
If your baby doesn’t sleep during their newborn session, nothing has gone wrong. Every baby is unique, and every session unfolds differently — that’s part of what makes your images so special.
Every baby is different, and that’s exactly how newborn sessions should be approached. If you’re looking for a patient, baby-led newborn photographer in Calgary or Okotoks, I’d love to create a session that feels calm and supportive for your family.
