One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is, “When should we book our newborn session?” And honestly — it’s such a smart thing to be thinking about early. The short answer? Booking ahead makes everything calmer once your baby arrives. Who doesn’t love checking one more thing off their to-do list?
The ideal time to book your newborn photography session is during your second trimester. This gives you peace of mind knowing your session is secured well before life gets too busy and you’re scrambling last minute to find a photographer. When parents book early, it removes one more thing from the mental to-do list — and that matters more than people realize.
I schedule newborn sessions based on due dates, not exact calendar days. Babies rarely arrive on schedule, so flexibility is built into how I plan my calendar. If your baby arrives early, we simply adjust. If they take their time, we shift your session accordingly. There is no penalty, no stress, and no pressure to rush your baby into a session before you’re ready.
Booking early also gives us time to talk through your preferences — colours you love, styles that feel like you, and whether you want to include family pictures or just baby alone. Those conversations are much easier when you’re not exhausted and newly postpartum.
For families in Calgary, my studio in Okotoks offers a calm, prepared environment where everything is ready for you. When parents walk in feeling confident and supported, the entire session flows more naturally — and that shows in the images.
If you’re earlier than the second trimester and worried you’re “too early,” you’re not. And if you’re further along and feeling behind, you’re not too late either. My job is to guide you through the process so this part feels easy.
If your baby has already arrived, please reach out and we can discuss your options. I take newborn up to 3 weeks!
